CHORAL STAFF AT CENTERVILLE

Ben Spalding is the head Choral Director at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio. At Centerville, Ben directs all of the choirs and the a cappella group Forte. Under his direction the number of students involved with the program has more than doubled. He also music directs for the fall and spring musicals at CHS.  He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Kentucky. 

Ben is the High School Outreach program manager for CASA, the Contemporary A Cappella Society and the co-founder of www.hsacappella.com.  

 Ben has served as a CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards) judge as well as a judge for the ICCA's (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella). Last year Forte received 2nd place in the nation in the ICHSA (International Championship of High School A Cappella). His love for music goes as far back as elementary school.   Music has and always will be a major driving force in his life.

​Kelly Korpusik has enjoyed working with the students of Centerville High school for the past several years.  She is currently the Associate Director and has the privilege of working with all of the choral groups at CHS. 
 
Kelly received her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Music Education from Miami University in 1999.  She started her music career teaching general music grades 1-6 at Beechwoods Elementary in the Winton Woods School district.  During this time she was also on staff with the Cincinnati Children’s Choir at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, directing one of their choirs and teaching classes. 
 
Kelly has taught private piano and voice lessons for over 18 years.  She was a certified Kindermusik instructor and taught classes for many years.  Last year she prepared voice students for OMEA solo & ensemble contest. 
 
She lives in Centerville with her husband and two children, who attend Tower Heights Middle School.

Trey Jackson

Trey Jackson was assistant director for Novae last year and is currently co-directing Novae with the illustrious Kathy Meyer.

Trey is a 5th year senior at Wright State University, double majoring in Psychology and Adolescent/Young Adult Social Science Education. He is a Centerville High School alumnus and was a member of Symphonic Choir and Forte a Cappella. He is currently in WSU’s Mens Chorale and Ethos. 

Trey loves a cappella and tries to stay involved in the community as much as possible. His other hobbies include gaming, cats, cheese eating contests, and candle making.

Kathy Meyer is thrilled to be co-directing Novae with the esteemed Trey Jackson.
​
Kathy attended Miami University and is currently back in Centerville working as a communication assistant at CSD Ohio Relay. She is a Centerville High School alumnus, and was a member of Symphonic Choir and Forte. At Miami, she was a member and the president of an all women’s a cappella group, the Miami Misfitz.
​
Kathy is excited to continue to grow her passion for music and a cappella through working with Novae. She also loves cats (probably more than Trey).

Centerville Middle Schools

Jennifer Hatfield

Jen Hatfield is starting her thirteenth year in Centerville City Schools.  She is the general and vocal music teacher at Tower Heights Middle School.  Jen’s vocal groups enjoy performing in the Centerville community, along with special performances in Columbus for Arts in School month and singing the National Anthem at a WSU basketball game each winter.   Muse Machine is another offering at THMS that Jen enjoys sharing with her students.
 
Jen is a 1996 graduate of Centerville High School,.  She went on Miami University and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education in 2000. In 2010 she earned a M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from Wright State University. 
 
Jen is the mother to three wonderful children and is thankful to be able to share the support and opportunities available in Centerville Schools.
Melissa Stamm

Melissa Stamm received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Dayton.  There she studied voice under Linda Snyder and Lee Hoffman and piano with John Benjamin.  Melissa has been s a member of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) since her undergraduate days, and presented her master’s thesis at the annual conference.  In addition to teaching general music and directing the choirs at Magsig Middle School, Melissa also directs the school’s annual play or musical. Musical theatre is one of Melissa’s passions, as a performer, audience member, and director.  She has worked with some of Centerville High School’s productions as a music director and/or pit conductor.  For her work with the high school shows, the DayTony/Miami Valley High School Theatre Awards has recognized Melissa numerous times, most recently for her work on Bonnie & Clyde and Legally Blonde The Musical. 
 
Inspired by her high school teacher, Melissa Stamm maintains a rubber duck collection in the classroom to remind her that “The performer is like the duck- calm and cool on the surface, but paddling like crazy underneath!”  Melissa loves spending time with her husband and two children and can be seen walking around Centerville to go to the parks, library, or dinner.

Centerville Elementary Schools

Bill Burns

The Cline “Cougar” Chorus is under the direction of Mr. Bill Burns. Bill has been teaching at Cline Elementary since 2007 and is enjoying his 20th year in music education.

He was a nominee for the 2018 Excellence in Education award by his colleagues at Cline. Bill holds degrees from  the University of Dayton (Music Education) and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (Saxophone Performance). He is past-president of the Jazz Education Connection of Ohio and has presented numerous conventions for the Ohio Music Education Association and the Jazz Education Network.

In addition to directing the Cline Chorus, Bill enjoys teaching classroom guitar, ukulele, and composing original songs for the Cline community.
Debbie Whitlock

Debbie Whitlock teaches music and choir at Weller Elementary School, and has taught in Centerville since 2003.  Debbie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Cedarville University and a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Dayton. 

Her 4th and 5th grade chorus at Weller, the Elktones, have performed the Star-Spangled Banner for both the Wright State basketball program and the Dayton Dragons.  Debbie has a passion for choral music and has served as chair of the OMEA District XII Elementary Honor Choir for three years. 

​In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters and serving in music ministry at her church.
